About Us

The Fans Of Film Music Society was formed in 2010 by Peter Hackman.  Since then, Peter, with the help of many L.A.-based friends, has been privileged to facilitate events that form new friendships and deepen our knowledge of, and appreciation for, film/TV/game music. 100 distinguished composers and musicians have been guests since 2010.

Fans Of Film Music is an annual event which brings together fans of media music from all over the world to meet the composers who create the music they love so much. After interviews, panel discussions, and Q&A sessions, the composers kindly sign some autographs and talk with the fans.

An earlier iteration of the event began in 2008, when Film Score Monthly president Lukas Kendall invited film music aficionados to step away from their computer screens to actually meet one another in person. Only a few thousand people on the entire planet are devoted fans and collectors of media music. Their rare interest often makes them feel isolated. Lukas’s first gathering in Los Angeles was small in numbers, but attendance grew significantly at the next gathering in 2009.

Peter attended that 2009 event and appreciated the chance to talk film music with other like-minded fans so much that, when Lukas Kendall decided to not host another event, Peter volunteered to continue what Lukas had started. Peter opened up the event to include composers and other industry professionals such as session musicians and soundtrack label executives.

Peter’s opening speech at the inaugural FFM event in 2010 touched at the heart of the group’s commitment: ”Whether you compose the music or buy it, we are all fans of film music.”

Acknowledgements

Many individuals have been instrumental in keeping our annual events going. Our deepest gratitude goes to them:

All the fans who have donated and who have shown up to our events, some of them for several years now.

All our guests and their managers, agents, publicists, assistants and significant others. Thank you so much for participating and for your help in making everything run smoothly!

Our distinguished hosts so far have been: Daniel Schweiger, Richard Kraft, Steven Allen Fox, Kaya Savas, and Anne Cecere.

Alan L Dull of D73 Concepts has been with us from the beginning, providing all our graphics, ads, posters, etc. They look awesome!

Greg Curtis and Vicki Giordano allowed us to make The Bridge Recording our venue from 2014 until 2018. Such a beautiful recording studio! In 2021, we were able to return to this venue, now named Silent Zoo Studios, thanks to new owner Holden Woodward and his wonderful staff, including Patrick Dillon Curry and Will Maxwell.

For the first two years, our events found their home at Dark Delicacies, a specialty bookstore owned and operated by the wonderful Del and Sue Howison.

In 2019 and 2020, the Academy Of Scoring Arts was our partner in organizing our events. Special thanks to all the ASA board members, especially David Das, Del Engen, Carrin Tanaka, and Reuven Herman.

Kaya Savas of Film.Music.Media has taken most of the official photos at our events, with Malik Daniels covering our 2021 event (thanks to a recommendation from Zach Tow) and Iki Ikram providing photos of the first two events. Video content kindly provided by Film.Music.Media, Academy Of Scoring Arts, Silent Zoo Studios, The Creative Cortex, Matthew Price, and Catherine Garcia.

So many volunteers have helped in roles large and small: from checking people into our events to carrying boxes to making sure people’s names are spelled correctly. To name but a few of them: Nancy Hoven, Henry Stanny, Brian Clevenger, Marshall Harvey, Dale Turner, Lori Magno, Gareth Hughes, and Edwin Wendler.

IN MEMORIAM: Along the way, we have unfortunately lost some of our most cherished friends, and we miss them more than we can express: Ken Thorne (1924-2014), Bill Begley (1959-2016), Daniel Licht (1957-2017), and Craig Rogers (1949-2020).
